Meaningful DIY Valentine Cards

Growing up my mom made our Valentine’s Day special. I didn’t have a romantic “valentine” until I was engaged so the extra care and thought she put into making this day was special. It was that little extra dose of love I want to pass on to our kiddos.

Each year, I try to hang some kind of a banner or garland. We get flowers and small gifts. A little bit of decorating goes a long way to help the kiddos feel a little extra special. It’s meant to be meaningful, not break the bank.

This year I had an extra dash of endurance to do homemade cards. I was surprised how inexpensive it was to make such a unique and creative gift. For under $5, I was able to make 4 cards and 8 bookmarks (with paper left over for future projects)! The 12×12 sheets of printed paper was on sale for only $1 at Hobby Lobby.

Use what you have though! You’ll be surprised how beautiful it will look!

Here are a few simple supplies you’ll need to make your homemade cards:
  • Card stock (we used drawing pad paper)
  • Paper with designs
  • Solid color paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • String or Ribbon
  • A shape to trace (I used a heart)
  • Optional embellishments: beads, glitter, buttons, etc.

I highly recommend getting the bookmarks laminated after you are finished. They will be more durable and will last longer!

Here’s what I worked on this year. First I made the cards and bookmarks for the kids.

Then I made a few items for my hubby. I truly treasure the handmade cards he has made for me in the past. So this year I was glad to be able to make him one. He loves to read so a bookmark was a no-brainer add-on.

Think about what your family likes to do and use that theme to develop your gifts and cards. Here are some things our kids enjoy and the wording we used to make it Valentine themed:

  • Coffee: I Love You A Latte
  • Llama: Llama You A Lot
  • Cactus: I’m Stuck on You
  • Doughnuts: Doughnut you know I Love You

I wouldn’t trade seeing their little faces wake up to the Valentines surprise in the morning… they felt loved.

Have fun crafting!
